A new, automated fast charging system for electric city buses has been introduced by ABB. The system will help to accelerate the adoption of electric buses, which are a key part of the move to zero-emission public transport.
The new system has been designed for use with ABB's Terra 53 High Power Charger, which can charge a bus in just six minutes. The system includes an automated bus-to-charger coupling system, which is said to be the first of its kind. This will enable quick and easy charging without the need for bus drivers to connect or disconnect cables.
In addition, the system features an intelligent energy management system, which will optimize the charging process to ensure that buses are charged efficiently and with minimum disruption to the power grid. The system will also provide real-time data on the status of the charging process, which will be accessible to operators and maintenance staff.
The new system is being trialed by bus operator Arriva in the city of Turku, Finland. If the trial is successful, ABB says that the system could be rolled out to other cities around the world.
ABB is a leading provider of charging infrastructure for electric vehicles. The company has installed more than 12,000 chargers in over 60 countries.
