27 electric trucks from Chinese automaker Byd are now in service at three different freight facilities in the Los Angeles area. The trucks will be used to transport cargo between the facilities, which are operated by Italian company Damco.
This is the first deployment of electric trucks in the United States for Byd, which is the world's largest manufacturer of electric vehicles.
The trucks were purchased by Damco as part of its commitment to reduce its environmental impact. The company plans to replace all of its diesel trucks with electric vehicles by 2025.
The electric trucks are expected to save Damco approximately $4,000 per year in fuel costs, and will also reduce emissions by nearly 30 metric tons per year.
