Ikea is working with several partners to electrify their last mile delivery fleet around the world. The company announced today that it has placed orders for 1,000 electric delivery vehicles with Volvo, Mercedes-Benz, and Renault. The electrification effort is part of Ikea’s goal to become fossil fuel free by 2025.

Ikea’s Electric Delivery Vehicles

The 1,000 electric delivery vehicles are a mix of vans and trucks. Ikea says that the vehicles were chosen based on their “proven track record, availability in multiple markets, and charging infrastructure.”

The firstElectric vehicles will be delivered to Ikea locations in Amsterdam, Los Angeles, Paris, and Shanghai later this year. Additional markets will be announced in the future. All of the vehicles are expected to be in operation by the end of 2020.

Ikea’s Sustainable Delivery Goals

Ikea’s goal is to have a completely fossil fuel free delivery fleet by 2025. The company is also working on developing sustainable packaging and wants to have all of its packaging recyclable or compostable by 2025. Lastly, Ikea is working on making all of its home delivery and click and collect orders carbon neutral by 2020.

To reach these goals, Ikea is working with a number of partners. In addition to the electric vehicle manufacturers, Ikea is also working with electric vehicle charging companies, including BP Chargemaster, EVBox, and Webasto.
