Hyundai has ended its development of a new engine ice manget material (NEM), which was being developed to improve the range of its hydrogen vehicles. The company will instead focus on developing a new hydrogen storage system.
The decision to end the NEM project was made after a review of the company's hydrogen development roadmap. Hyundai says that it will now focus on developing a new hydrogen storage system that it believes will be more efficient and cost-effective.
Hyundai has been working on hydrogen vehicles for several years and launched its first production hydrogen car, the ix35 Fuel Cell, in 2013. The company has since sold a total of 1,600 fuel cell vehicles, with the majority going to fleets in Europe and South Korea.
Hyundai is not the only automaker to have put development of a hydrogen car on hold. Toyota, which has been working on hydrogen vehicles for two decades, has said that it will not bring a hydrogen car to market until 2020 at the earliest.
