What is it?

Hyundai and Kia have developed a new heat pump system for electric vehicles (EVs) that they say will improve range in cold weather. The system uses waste heat from the battery and motors to warm the interior of the car, rather than drawing power from the battery to run a resistive heater.

How does it work?

The heat pump system consists of a compressor, evaporator, and condenser. The compressor pumps a refrigerant through the system. The refrigerant first passes through the evaporator, where it picks up heat from the battery and motors. It then goes to the condenser, where it transfers that heat to the interior of the car.

What are the benefits?

Hyundai and Kia say that the system is up to three times more efficient than a resistive heater, which means it will improve range in cold weather. The system will also reduce battery degradation and improve cabin comfort.

What vehicles will it be available on?

The system will be available on the Hyundai Kona Electric and Kia Niro Electric. It will be available in Europe later this year and in other markets in 2020.
