India Pilots AI-Driven Payments on ChatGPT: UPI Becomes Conversational

India is on the verge of transforming the way we pay. The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), in collaboration with Razorpay and OpenAI, is piloting AI-driven payments on ChatGPT, enabling users to make UPI transactions seamlessly within a conversation.

Imagine this: you’re chatting with an AI, exploring products, or seeking recommendations. When you decide to make a purchase, there’s no need to switch apps, scan a QR code, or enter your UPI PIN manually. Simply say, “Pay via UPI,” and the transaction is completed instantly.

This innovation is more than a fintech integration — it signals that India’s digital infrastructure — including UPI, Aadhaar, and account aggregators — is robust enough to support a new, intuitive layer of financial interaction. Axis Bank, Airtel Payments Bank, and BigBasket are participating in the pilot, showcasing the potential of conversational commerce in real-world applications.

The larger implication is profound: money is slowly merging with conversation. If AI can understand user intent and UPI can execute payments securely, transactions are no longer just operations — they become intent fulfilled.

According to fintech experts like Pranav Koomar, this shift marks the future of payments: not just faster, but truly frictionless, seamless, and intuitive.

As India leads the world in UPI adoption, this pilot could redefine the digital payment experience, turning routine transactions into effortless interactions powered by AI.
