In looking at the Taycan, it’s easy to see that Porsche went to great lengths to design an electric car that would live up to the brand’s performance legacy. But why did they specifically choose to design an 800V car?
In short, by using an 800V system instead of the more common 400V, Porsche was able to design a Taycan with some serious performance advantages.
First, 800V allows for quicker charging. While 400V systems can charge at up to 11kW, 800V can charge at 22kW. That means the Taycan can recharge up to 80% in just over 22 minutes at a dedicated 800V charger.
But the benefits of 800V don’t stop there. Because the voltage is higher, less current is needed to achieve the same power output. That means that the cables and connections can be smaller, lighter, and simpler.
All of this adds up to a Taycan that is not only quicker to charge, but also lighter and more efficient. And that’s why Porsche went to the trouble of designing an 800V Taycan.
