Chargepoint and Gatik have announced a collaboration to develop an ecosystem of electric vehicle charging and autonomous truck technology solutions to meet the needs of commercial operators of self-driving electric trucks.
The companies aim to provide an end-to-end solution that includes everything from electric vehicle (EV) home charging, to public fast charging, to autonomous vehicle (AV) technology. The goal is to enable fleets of self-driving electric trucks to run 24/7 without the constraints of human drivers.
"This is a natural extension of our work with Gatik on last-mile logistics," said Pasquale Romano, CEO of Chargepoint. "As we electrify the transportation sector, it is essential that we work with leading companies like Gatik to develop the ecosystem of infrastructure and services necessary to make autonomous electric trucks a reality."
"We are excited to partner with Chargepoint to develop the technology and infrastructure needed to power our autonomous electric trucks," said Gautam Narang, CEO of Gatik. "This is an important step in our mission to provide safe, efficient and sustainable last-mile logistics solutions."
The collaboration will focus on three key areas:
- Public fast charging: Chargepoint and Gatik will work together to develop a solution for public fast charging of autonomous electric trucks. This will help ensure that fleets can quickly and easily recharge their vehicles, even when drivers are not available.
- In-vehicle technology: The companies will also work on developing in-vehicle technology solutions that will help optimize charging for autonomous electric trucks. This will help ensure that vehicles are charged efficiently and that drivers can easily monitor and control their charging.
- Ecosystem development: In addition to developing technology solutions, the companies will also work on building an ecosystem of charging infrastructure and services that will support the growth of autonomous electric trucks.
The collaboration between Chargepoint and Gatik is just one example of the growing trend of companies working together to develop the infrastructure and technology needed to support the growth of autonomous vehicles.
Other notable examples include the partnership between Ford and Volkswagen, which was announced earlier this year, and the partnership between Daimler and Bosch, which was announced in 2017.
