India has secured a seat on the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) for the term 2026 to 2028, marking a significant diplomatic achievement that reinforces the country’s commitment to global development and multilateral engagement.
The election, held at the UN headquarters, saw India garner strong support from member states, reflecting international confidence in its leadership and developmental vision. ECOSOC is one of the principal organs of the UN, responsible for coordinating the economic, social, and environmental policies of the organization and its affiliated agencies.
India’s election to ECOSOC comes at a time when the country has been increasingly active in shaping global discussions on sustainability, inclusive growth, digital transformation, and healthcare equity. By joining the council, India aims to contribute more meaningfully to policy-making processes that affect the developing world and to support global efforts in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
India has previously served on ECOSOC and has used its platform to advocate for the Global South, promote gender equality, and drive innovation in poverty alleviation and climate action. With its re-election, India is expected to push for a more balanced and representative international economic order.
Diplomats have hailed this development as a testament to India’s growing stature in international affairs. Officials from the Ministry of External Affairs emphasized that India’s focus will remain on cooperation, transparency, and building resilient international partnerships during its tenure.
The ECOSOC term from 2026 to 2028 will provide India with opportunities to lead critical debates and collaborate on pressing global challenges such as post-pandemic recovery, energy transition, and digital inclusion.
India’s entry into ECOSOC underscores its commitment to a rules-based global system and to being an active contributor to shaping a more equitable and sustainable future.
