On January 17, 2017, the world’s first all-electric passenger ferry powered by Torqeedo Deep Blue was inaugurated on the Mae Klong River in Bangkok. The new ferry will serve as a water taxi on the popular Chao Phraya River Express Boat service.
The Mae Klong Express Boat service has been in operation for more than 30 years and is a popular way for locals and tourists alike to travel around Bangkok. The service currently consists of 18 diesel-powered boats, which ply the Mae Klong and Chao Phraya rivers. With the addition of the all-electric ferry, the Mae Klong Express Boat service will now be partially powered by clean, renewable energy.
The new electric ferry was built by Royalorf and is 12 meters long, with a capacity of up to 100 passengers. It is powered by four Torqeedo Deep Blue 100 electric motors, which are each coupled to a Propeller shaft. The motors are fed by batteries, which are recharged using shore power between trips.
