The Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD) has unveiled a new hybrid fire truck that it says will help the department reduce its emissions and save money on fuel costs.
The truck, which was built by American company Oshkosh, is a mix of a gas-powered engine and an electric motor. It can switch between the two power sources depending on the situation, and the LAFD says it will be much more fuel efficient than a traditional fire truck.
The department plans to use the new truck for non-emergency tasks such as community events and school visits. It will also be used to respond to some low-level emergencies.
The LAFD says the truck is part of its commitment to reduce its carbon footprint and become more environmentally friendly.
"This is an important step in meeting our goal of reducing our emissions by 50 percent by 2030," said LAFD Chief Ralph Terrazas.
The department has been working to reduce its emissions for several years, and has already switched to cleaner-burning fuel for its fire engines and introduced electric vehicles into its fleet.
The new truck will cost the department around $1 million, but the LAFD says it will save money in the long run thanks to its improved fuel efficiency.
