General Motors and FedEx Express teamed up to deliver the first set of BrightDrop EV600 electric vans to the shipping giant. The delivery marks a major milestone in the companies' plan to electrify the last-mile delivery sector and comes just a day after GM announced plans to invest $27 billion in electric and autonomous vehicles through 2025.

The BrightDrop EV600 is a purpose-built electric delivery van that features a highly configurable interior and cargo area, a range of up to 250 miles on a single charge, and fast-charging capabilities that allow for a 80% charge in just 30 minutes.

The vans were delivered to FedEx's Memphis, Tennessee, hub and will be put into service immediately. FedEx plans to deploy 500 EV600s across the U.S. and Canada by 2022, with the first 50 vans rolling out in 2021.

"FedEx has a long history of investing in game-changing technologies and we are committed to reducing our emissions," said Patrick Fitzgerald, senior vice president of global engineering and sustainability at FedEx Express. "Electric vehicles will be an important part of our journey to become more sustainable, and we are proud to be the first company to receive the BrightDrop EV600."

"The BrightDrop EV600 is the first of its kind and it has the potential to redefine last-mile delivery," said Mary Barra, GM chairman and CEO. "This is just the beginning for BrightDrop and GM as we work together to electrify the logistics industry and help our commercial customers meet their sustainability goals."

The BrightDrop EV600 is part of GM's larger BrightDrop ecosystem, which also includes the BrightDrop EP1 pallet and the BrightDrop EV100 light commercial vehicle.
