In an effort to accelerate the electrification of freight transport, a new consortium has been established in Europe. The Electric Freight Consortium is a partnership of six organisations from across the continent, all of which are committed to the development and deployment of electric vehicles for goods transport.

The consortium members are: DHL, Daimler, DB Schenker, the Fraunhofer institutes ISC and IVI, and the energy company innogy. One of the key aims of the group is to encourage the uptake of electric vehicles by highlighting the advantages they offer over traditional diesel-powered trucks.

According to a study by the consortium, electric freight vehicles can provide significant reductions in emissions, noise and operating costs. They also have the potential to improve traffic flow and reduce congestion.

To promote the uptake of electric freight vehicles, the consortium members will work together on a number of initiatives. These include raising awareness of the benefits of electrification, developing new charging infrastructure and supporting research and development.

The Electric Freight Consortium is just one of a number of initiatives that are aiming to accelerate the transition to a low-carbon economy. With the transport sector accounting for a significant proportion of global greenhouse gas emissions, the move to electric vehicles is seen as a vital step in the fight against climate change.
