The City of Chicago has announced it will purchase 20 electric refuse trucks, as part of its goal to have the entire fleet of 2,200 garbage trucks powered by clean energy by 2025.

The new electric garbage trucks will cost about $ 2.5 million, with funding coming from the city’s Climate Change Mitigation and Resiliency Fund. The trucks are expected to save the city $ 4.2 million in fuel and maintenance costs over their 12-year lifespan.

“This is another big step forward in our efforts to transition the city’s fleet to clean energy and make Chicago a national leader in the fight against climate change,” said Mayor Rahm Emanuel in a statement.

The electric refuse trucks will join a growing fleet of clean energy vehicles in Chicago, which includes more than 1,800 hybrid buses and nearly 400 electric vehicles used by the city’s fleet and sister agencies.
