Karnataka has intensified surveillance and implemented stringent measures following the detection of bird flu (H5N1 avian influenza) cases in the districts of Raichur, Chikkaballapur, and Ballari. The virus was identified among poultry in Manvi taluk (Raichur), Chikkaballapur taluk (Chikkaballapur), and Sandur taluk (Ballari).

Immediate Actions Taken:

  • Culling Operations: Authorities have initiated culling of affected and at-risk poultry within a one-kilometer radius of the infection sites to prevent further spread.

  • Movement Restrictions: The transportation of poultry and related products has been restricted in and out of the affected zones to contain the outbreak.

  • Enhanced Surveillance: Monitoring has been intensified in the surrounding areas, with rapid response teams deployed to detect and manage potential new cases promptly.

Preventive Measures in Border Districts:

In response to avian flu outbreaks in neighboring states—Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, and Telangana—Karnataka had previously imposed a high alert in its border districts, including Belagavi, Bidar, Ballari, and Raichur. Preventive steps included halting the import of poultry from these states and conducting rigorous checks on vehicles transporting poultry products.

Public Advisory:

  • Consumption Safety: While properly cooked poultry and eggs are safe for consumption, the public is advised to ensure thorough cooking and maintain proper kitchen hygiene.

  • Reporting Unusual Bird Deaths: Residents are urged to report any sudden or unexplained deaths of birds to local veterinary authorities promptly.

  • Avoiding Contact: Direct contact with sick or dead birds should be avoided to minimize the risk of transmission.

The state government continues to monitor the situation closely and is prepared to implement additional measures as necessary to safeguard public health and the poultry industry.
