Electric vehicle (EV) drivers in California now have access to the highest-powered charging stations available with the opening of Electrify America's first 350 kilowatt (kW) charging station in Sacramento.
The new station, located at the Sacramento International Airport, can charge EVs at up to 20 times the speed of standard Level 2 chargers. It is also the first of 10 stations that Electrify America plans to open in California by the end of 2018.
The 350 kW charger is designed for use with the new generation of EVs that are being developed with faster charging speeds in mind. These include the Porsche Taycan, Audi e-tron, and Jaguar I-Pace, which are all expected to be available within the next year or so.
While the new station is currently only available to use with the Porsche Taycan, Electrify America plans to have it compatible with all 350 kW-capable EVs by the end of 2019.
In addition to the fast charging speeds, the new station also features an air-conditioned lounge for drivers to relax in while their cars are charging.
The Sacramento station is just the first of many that Electrify America plans to build out in California. The company has committed to investing $2 billion in EV infrastructure across the United States, with a particular focus on building a nationwide network of high-powered chargers.
In California alone, Electrify America plans to build out a total of 48 stations with 350 kW chargers by the end of 2019. The company also plans to install over 2,000 Level 2 chargers and over 100 DC fast chargers across the state.
