- Gasoline and diesel cars are comparable in that they both have an internal combustion engine. Gasoline cars use spark-ignited engines, while diesel cars use compression-ignited engines. Components like the battery, ECM, exhaust system, fuel injection system, fuel line, fuel pump, fuel tank, internal combustion engine, and gearbox are common to both types of cars.
