ChatGPT: Trainee develops application to ferret out AI-written essays

Edward Tian created an application, GPTZero, to identify if a message was composed by a human or a robot. He did this in response to the surge of ChatGPT last year, which is a free online chatbot that can adeptly create almost anything. He said he has since been contacted by educators and college admissions officers from around the world who are interested in how it works. The app works by measuring perplexity and burstiness and assigning each variable a score. He believes this is the first step towards properly navigating the future of artificial intelligence.
