Some might say that Elon Musk, the billionaire CEO of Tesla, is obsessed with electric vehicles. But it's not just cars that he's interested in electrifying. He's also got his sights set on boats.

Musk recently took to Twitter to show off his latest electric vehicle: a sailboat that he's fitted with a Torqeedo hybrid drive.

The Torqeedo drive is a combination of an electric motor and a diesel generator. It's designed to be used in boats where there's not a lot of space for a traditional engine.

Musk's sailboat is apparently the first one in the world to be fitted with the drive. And he seems pretty happy with it, judging by his tweet.

The drive isn't cheap, though. It costs around $19,000. But Musk is probably used to spending big bucks on his toys. After all, he did just drop $100 million on a new yacht.

What is the Torqeedo Hybrid Drive?

The Torqeedo Hybrid Drive is a combination of an electric motor and a diesel generator. It's designed to be used in boats where there's not a lot of space for a traditional engine.

The drive consists of two parts:

  • An electric motor
  • A diesel generator

The electric motor is used for propulsion, while the diesel generator charges the batteries. The combination of the two gives the drive its hybrid capabilities.

The drive is controlled by a touchscreen display, which shows information such as battery level and remaining range.

How Much Does It Cost?

The Torqeedo Hybrid Drive isn't cheap. It costs around $19,000. But Musk is probably used to spending big bucks on his toys. After all, he did just drop $100 million on a new yacht.
