Nio, Inc. (NIO), a pioneer in the premium electric vehicle space, has selected ON Semiconductor’s (ON SEMI) VE-Trac Direct SiC Power Modules for its next generation of electric vehicles (EVs).
The VE-Trac Direct modules enable the higher efficiency and power density required by NIO’s high-performance EVs, which are designed to deliver an unparalleled driving experience.
NIO is the first automaker to adopt ON SEMI’s VE-Trac Direct technology, which is based on the company’s industry-leading SiC MOSFETs.
The VE-Trac Direct modules are being used in the NIO ES8, a seven-seater premium SUV, and the NIO ES6, a five-seater premium SUV.
“We are thrilled to partner with NIO, a leading innovator in the premium EVs space,” said Jim Zheng, Senior Vice President and General Manager of ON Semiconductor’s Power Discrete and Modules Division.
“The VE-Trac Direct modules offer best-in-class efficiency and power density, which are critical for the high-performance EVs NIO is known for.
We are proud to enable NIO’s continued commitment to delivering the best possible driving experience for its customers.”
The VE-Trac Direct modules offer up to 10% lower conduction losses and 20% lower switching losses than traditional IGBT-based modules, allowing for higher efficiency and power density.
The modules also feature a unique direct-connect topology that eliminates the need for interconnects between the power semiconductors and the module’s baseplate.
This results in a further reduction in conduction losses, as well as a reduction in package size and weight.
The VE-Trac Direct modules are currently in production and are available in a variety of power ratings up to 1,200V/650A.
