On December 28, 2016, the Lucid Air Beta prototype took to the roads for its first public outing, a 400-mile journey from Lucid’s headquarters in Menlo Park, California to the company’s new manufacturing facility in Casa Grande, Arizona.
The Lucid Air is a luxurious all-electric sedan with advanced technology features, including:
- Self-driving hardware and software: All Lucid Airs will be built with the necessary sensors and computing power for autonomous operation, although the feature will not be enabled until it is fully validated and legal. Lucid’s vision is to offer autonomous operation as an upgradeable software package.
- Over-the-air updates: Lucid Air will use OTA updates for both Autonomous driving software and for mainstream car software updates, adding new features and functionality throughout the life of the vehicle.
- Sustainable materials: The Lucid Air will use sustainable materials in its interior, including responsibly sourced leather, and offer customers the option of a completely vegan interior.
The Lucid Air Beta prototype is fitted with production-intent powertrain hardware. This includes Lucid’s proprietary 900-volt battery architecture and electric motors.
During the journey, the Lucid Air achieved an average of 235 miles per charge – significantly exceeding its EPA estimated range of approximately 200 miles.
The Lucid Air is scheduled to enter production in 2018.
