The state of Illinois is proposing a $1,000 annual fee on electric vehicles, according to a report from the Chicago Tribune. The proposal is contained in a draft of the Illinois Transportation Vision 2025 plan, which is still open for public comment.
If enacted, the annual fee would be in addition to the state's current $39 annual fee on electric vehicles, which was put in place in 2015. The new fee would raise an estimated $19 million per year, which would be used to fund transportation projects.
The $1,000 fee would make Illinois one of the most hostile states in the country for electric vehicles, and it would be sure to stifle EV adoption.
The 2500-page draft of the Illinois Transportation Vision 2025 plan is available for viewing and comment on the Illinois Department of Transportation website.
