Ford is investing an additional 125 million pounds in its Halewood plant to support faster production of the all-new Mustang Mach-E and the electric Transit.
The investment will create approximately 300 new jobs at Halewood, which currently employs 4,500 people, and will see the site become home to both battery electric vehicle production and body assembly. Body assembly for the Transit Custom Plug-In Hybrid will also continue at Halewood.
The new investment will see the installation of a second body shop, paint shop capacity increased by 50 percent and a new trim and final line set up, capable of building both battery electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles on the same line. Significant upgrades to manufacturing infrastructure are also required, including a new high-tech battery assembly area.
The Ford Mustang Mach-E will be the first all-electric sports utility vehicle from a mainstream manufacturer and the first Mustang with zero emissions. It will go on sale in late 2020 in the United States, followed by Europe, including the UK, in early 2021.
“The UK is a key part of our plans for electrification,” said Stuart Rowley, president, Ford of Europe. “Our new all-electric Mustang Mach-E will be built at our modernised Halewood plant, while electric Transit production will start here in a purpose-built facility. This updated manufacturing plan gives us the flexibility to deliver our exciting range of electrified products, while unlocking significant value from our existing facilities.”
- The electrification of the Transit Custom is part of Ford’s US$11.5 billion global investment in electrified vehicles, which includes an all-new family of battery electric vehicles coming to market through 2022.
- More than 20 battery electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles will be available from Ford by the end of 2022 – including the all-new Mustang Mach-E.
- Halewood is the only Ford of Europe plant to produce three different Transit models – Transit Custom, Transit and Transit Connect – as well as the Land Rover Discovery Sport.
