Chinese company Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. Ltd (CATL) is planning to launch a new battery system that will be available in 2023. The system, which will be known as the '3C' cell, is designed to pack more power into a smaller space.
The 3C cell will have a capacity of 100 watt-hours per liter (Wh/l), which is significantly higher than the current lithium-ion battery standard of 60 Wh/l. This will allow electric vehicles (EVs) to travel further on a single charge.
CATL is also working on a new type of cathode material that will enable the 3C cell to charge and discharge faster than current lithium-ion batteries. This will be particularly beneficial for EVs that are used for short, urban journeys where rapid recharging is more important than range.
The company plans to start mass production of the 3C cell in 2023, and it is hoped that the new battery system will help to further accelerate the adoption of EVs.
