A strong cold-wave and rainstorm alert has been issued across several states as winter conditions intensify. The latest weather forecast indicates a significant dip in temperatures accompanied by chilly winds, scattered rainfall and storm-like conditions in parts of northern, central and eastern India. Authorities have urged residents to remain cautious, especially during the night and early morning hours when conditions are expected to be particularly harsh.
The India Meteorological Department reported that a combination of western disturbances, moisture influx and wind shifts is driving this sudden weather change. Northern states including Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan and Delhi are likely to witness a sharp fall in minimum temperatures, bringing a strong cold-wave across the region. Dense fog during early hours is expected to reduce visibility and affect road and rail travel.
Central India may also experience cooler temperatures and isolated thunderstorms as cold winds sweep down from the northern plains. Eastern states including Bihar, Jharkhand and West Bengal have been alerted for rainfall accompanied by gusty winds. Hill regions in Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand may receive fresh snowfall, further intensifying the cold across nearby plains.
Health experts advise people to dress in layers, avoid prolonged exposure to the cold and stay indoors as much as possible, particularly for senior citizens, children and those with respiratory conditions. Sudden temperature variations and moist winds may increase cases of seasonal flu, cough and breathing issues.
Local authorities have initiated preparedness measures, including monitoring vulnerable areas, issuing advisories to schools and deploying teams for emergency assistance. Drivers and commuters are advised to exercise caution as fog, slippery roads and low visibility may disrupt movement. Farmers, too, have been advised to protect standing crops from frost and excessive moisture.
The weather system is expected to persist for the next few days, with gradual improvement likely only after the disturbance moves eastward. Until then, residents are urged to follow official weather updates and take necessary precautions to stay safe during the severe cold-wave and rainstorm phase.
