Electric car charging infrastructure company The Stack has submitted plans to the City of Cupertino, California to build a mixed-use development with retail and restaurants on a site that would include a 150 kilowatt (kW) direct current (DC) fast charger.
If approved, the charger would be the first of its kind in the U.S. and would be able to serve up to 30 vehicles at a time. The charger would be available to the public 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
The proposed development, located at 20350 Stevens Creek Boulevard, would also include 3,000 square feet (280 square meters) of retail space and 2,500 square feet (230 square meters) of restaurant space. The site is currently occupied by a gas station and a vacant lot.
The Stack says the charger would be able to serve all types of electric vehicles, including those with battery sizes ranging from 24 kilowatt-hours (kWh) to 100 kWh. The charger would use The Stack's proprietary technology to optimize charging times and minimize vehicle idling.
The Stack is a subsidiary of Iberdrola, a Spanish multinational electric utility company. Iberdrola has been investing in electric vehicle infrastructure in Europe and the United States in recent years. In 2018, Iberdrola acquired electric car charging company Pulsar, which operated in Spain and Portugal.
In 2019, Iberdrola invested $110 million in electric car charging company ChargePoint, which is based in the United States. Iberdrola has also been working with automakers on electric vehicle projects. In 2018, Iberdrola and BMW Group announced a joint venture to develop electric car charging infrastructure in Spain.
