Proterra, a leading manufacturer of zero-emission electric buses, announced today that it will build a new battery factory in South Carolina. The new factory will produce Proterra’s proprietary high-performance batteries, which are critical components of the company’s zero-emission electric buses.

“This new factory is a major step forward in our mission to electrify transportation and build a sustainable future for all,” said Proterra CEO Ryan Popple. “The Proterra team is proud to be investing in South Carolina and creating new American jobs as we ramp up production of our industry-leading batteries.”

The new factory will be located in the Charleston area and is expected to create more than 200 jobs. Proterra’s battery factory will be the first of its kind in South Carolina and will contribute to the state’s growing reputation as a hub for advanced manufacturing.

“We are thrilled that Proterra has chosen to locate its new battery factory in South Carolina,” said South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster. “This is a great company that is on the cutting edge of technology, and we welcome them to our state.”

Proterra’s batteries are purpose-built for electric buses and are engineered to deliver the highest levels of safety, efficiency, and reliability. The batteries are an integral part of Proterra’s industry-leading electric buses, which have been deployed by more than 300 transit agencies and commercial operators across North America.

The new factory will help Proterra meet the growing demand for its electric buses and batteries. In the last year, Proterra has secured more than $600 million in funding to accelerate the deployment of its zero-emission technology.
