Nissan Motor Company has announced that it will now warranty its Leaf electric cars against battery capacity loss.

The warranty, which is valid for five years or 60,000 miles (whichever comes first), covers any capacity loss that falls below nine bars on the car's battery capacity gauge. That's a loss of about 30 percent.

The move comes as a response to customer feedback, and from an acknowledgement that early Leaf owners were seeing unexpectedly high rates of battery capacity loss.

This is a big deal, as battery capacity loss is the number one concern of electric car owners. It's also the main reason why people are hesitant to buy an electric car in the first place.

With this warranty in place, Nissan is making a strong commitment to its customers that it will stand behind its product.

  • This is a good move by Nissan.
  • It shows that the company is confident in the Leaf's battery.
  • It should help to ease the concerns of potential buyers.
