A Unique Celebration
Washington, D.C. — As Diwali lights up homes across the globe, Indian-origin astronaut Sunita Williams, currently stationed on the International Space Station (ISS), has brought a unique twist to the celebrations. In a heartfelt video message, she shared her warmest Diwali wishes with those celebrating in the U.S. and beyond. This year, she had the opportunity to celebrate such a significant festival 260 miles above Earth.
Greetings from Above
“Greetings from the ISS,” Williams beamed in her video, which was broadcast during a special Diwali event at the White House. She expressed her joy at being able to observe Diwali from space, reminiscing about her father’s dedication to preserving their cultural roots by teaching her about the festival and other Indian traditions. Williams described Diwali as a time when “goodness in the world prevails,” emphasizing the festival's message of hope and renewal.
Recognition of Community
In her message, she extended her gratitude to President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris for honoring the significance of Diwali. “Thank you to the President and the Vice President for celebrating Diwali with our community today and for recognizing the many contributions of our community,” she said. This acknowledgment highlights the increasing visibility of diverse cultures in American society and the importance of cultural festivals in uniting people.
A Remarkable Mission
Sunita Williams has been aboard the ISS since June 5, along with fellow astronaut Butch Willmore. Their journey began with the launch of Boeing’s Starliner spacecraft, marking its first crewed flight. However, the mission took an unexpected turn when NASA decided to bring the Starliner back to Earth without its crew, deeming it “too risky” to return the astronauts at that time. Williams and Willmore will remain aboard the ISS until their planned return in February next year, extending their mission from what was initially intended as a week-long test flight to nearly eight months in total.
Resilience in Celebration
Despite the challenges of their situation, Williams's celebration of Diwali from the ISS adds a layer of joy and resilience to her experience. The sight of Earth from above, coupled with the warmth of family traditions, makes this year’s Diwali unlike any other. As she wishes everyone a Happy Diwali, her message resonates deeply with those who find hope and joy in the festival, regardless of their location.
A Testament to the Human Spirit
As the festivities continue, both on Earth and in space, Sunita Williams’s journey is a testament to the spirit of human endurance and cultural celebration.
