Introduction
Bhavish Aggarwal stands tall as one of the leading entrepreneurs of India’s startup revolution. As the co-founder and CEO of Ola Cabs, he transformed the way Indians travel by introducing one of the largest ride-hailing platforms in the country. Later, with Ola Electric, he aimed to revolutionize the automobile industry by building sustainable electric mobility solutions. His journey reflects vision, persistence, and an unshakable belief in solving real-world problems through technology and innovation.
When he started Ola in 2010 with his co-founder Ankit Bhati, India’s taxi industry was fragmented, unreliable, and largely offline. Aggarwal’s vision was simple yet ambitious: to provide safe, convenient, and technology-driven mobility solutions for millions of Indians. Today, Ola is present in hundreds of cities, not just in India but across several international markets.
Bhavish’s entrepreneurial journey also highlights resilience. From facing investor skepticism to competing with global giants like Uber, from regulatory challenges to ambitious expansion into electric vehicles, he has emerged as one of India’s most influential entrepreneurs. His story is not only about building a business but about driving a movement towards a smarter, sustainable future.
Early Life
Bhavish Aggarwal was born on 28 August 1985, in Ludhiana, Punjab, into a middle-class Punjabi family. His father worked in the agricultural industry, while his mother was a homemaker. Growing up in a modest household, Bhavish was taught the importance of hard work, discipline, and education.
From a young age, Bhavish showed a keen interest in technology and problem-solving. He enjoyed building things, experimenting with gadgets, and reading about innovations in science and computers. Unlike many children, he didn’t just consume technology—he wanted to understand how it worked. His parents noticed his curiosity and supported him in pursuing academics seriously.
Life in Ludhiana gave him a sense of small-town simplicity but also inspired him to dream bigger. Watching the struggles of daily life and the inefficiencies in services around him later shaped his entrepreneurial mindset.
Teenage Years
During his teenage years, Bhavish’s passion for computers and science became stronger. He was known among his peers as someone who excelled academically, particularly in mathematics and science. His teachers often described him as focused, disciplined, and imaginative.
His teenage years were also marked by his growing fascination with entrepreneurship. He was inspired by stories of tech entrepreneurs around the world, especially during the rise of the internet era. Though his initial ambition was to become a researcher or engineer, the seeds of entrepreneurship were being planted during these years.
Bhavish was also deeply competitive and goal-oriented in his teenage life. Whether it was school projects, competitions, or academics, he gave his best and stood out for his determination. This trait later helped him immensely as he entered the highly competitive startup world.
Education
Bhavish Aggarwal’s educational journey reflects his brilliance and commitment. He completed his schooling in Ludhiana and later moved to Delhi for higher studies. His excellent performance in academics secured him a place at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay, one of India’s most prestigious institutions.
At IIT Bombay, he pursued a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science and Engineering. He graduated in 2008 with flying colors. While at IIT, Bhavish not only honed his technical skills but also nurtured his entrepreneurial aspirations.
During his college years, he worked on several projects related to technology and innovation. He was known for his creativity and problem-solving approach, often looking at technology as a tool to solve practical challenges in society.
After graduation, Bhavish secured a job with Microsoft Research India as an assistant researcher. At Microsoft, he worked for two years on research projects, including file system technologies, and even filed two patents. This period gave him valuable exposure to cutting-edge technology and corporate culture. However, despite his success at Microsoft, Bhavish was restless. He wanted to build something of his own, something that would make a larger impact.
Career
Bhavish Aggarwal’s career took a bold turn in 2010 when he decided to quit his secure job at Microsoft and start his own company. Initially, he launched an online holiday and tour planning service called Olatrip.com. The idea was to provide travel packages and weekend trips for young professionals. However, during one of his own taxi rides for Olatrip, he faced a negative experience that changed the course of his career.
While traveling from Bengaluru to Bandipur, his taxi driver stopped midway and demanded more money than the agreed fare. Bhavish was forced to continue his journey under uncomfortable circumstances. This incident sparked the idea of creating a more reliable, transparent, and technology-enabled cab service.
With this thought, Bhavish, along with his IIT friend Ankit Bhati, launched Ola Cabs in December 2010. The name "Ola" was chosen for its easy recall and positive vibe.
At first, the concept was met with skepticism. India’s taxi industry was unorganized, drivers were not tech-savvy, and customers were hesitant about using online platforms. However, Bhavish persisted. He onboarded drivers, educated them about technology, and offered incentives to attract customers. Ola quickly grew as urban India embraced smartphone-driven mobility solutions.
By 2014, Ola had expanded across multiple cities and became the market leader in India, outpacing global competitor Uber. Bhavish continued to innovate, introducing categories like Ola Micro, Ola Share, Ola Auto, and Ola Bike, catering to diverse customer needs.
In 2017, Bhavish embarked on another ambitious journey—Ola Electric Mobility. His vision was to create India’s largest electric vehicle ecosystem, focusing on electric scooters and future EV products. With Ola Electric, he aimed to reduce dependency on fossil fuels and make India a global leader in sustainable mobility.
